Rare! – Known as “petacas”, these rawhide boxes were ubiquitous in New Mexico, and paper within early 19th century inventories. Likely made in Northern Mexico, Chihuahua perhaps? Several larger examples extant were built to survive the rigors of travel by ox driven cart.
