48” x 94” Dates to the 3rd Quarter of the 19th Century.
Classic banded and designed Rio Grande Blanket Woven in two widths with wool warp.
A classic Hispanic New Mexican Rio Grande Blanket in pristine original condition. Five tapestry bands feature alternating dark brown and indigo “mariposa” devices, adapted from design devices found in Saltillo serapes that began to appear in New Mexico during the 19t Century. Weft carry-overs of indigo and brown can be seen along the edges, an artifact of a production technique that would typically wear away with use (see detail image).
