52” x 83”
ca. 1880’s
Field collected in the San Luis Valley of Southern Colorado, this banded and designed transitional blanket suggests strong Navajo influences with it’s terraced center band devices. Woven in two widths with primarily light and dark natural wool yarns, and sparing use of just two aniline dyes (pink and scarlet) over dark hand spun, two ply wool warp, this unusual combination yields a graphically strong, cohesive design with minor use of color.
Overall good, intact original condition for such a long history of use.
